Copper Underwing id

Over the past year of moth trapping in the garden I have always been checking the Copper Underwings when they are around, for it close cousin the Svensson's Copper Underwing. On the 12th August I finally hit the jackpot and caught one!

Below is a short guide to the differences between the two;

Svensson's underwing has a copper colour that extends up to the joint of the wing, with no contrasting clear cut in colour like Copper Underwing.

Svensson's - Not very well marked above, compared to Copper Underwing below.

Copper Underwing has a clear cut of colour between the copper and white of the underwing, as seen here.

Palps- Although I have no photos of the heads of these moths another key and reliable feature is the colour of the palps (the protruding prongs on the face) On Copper Underwing they are light and on Svensson's they are dark.

Latest July Moth Pics

29th The night started promising with an Orange Swift and a Old Lady, but by the morning there was not many moth caught, the only other notible moths caught being Early Thorn and a increase of Common Rustic.

30th - A new speices - Tissue Moth was an unexpected record. Others caught included Scalloped Oak, Nut Tree Tussock and another Early Thorn.

31st - The last night of July was a half decent one with 34 Moths caught. There was a sudden influx of Ruby Tigers which was nice - 6 Ruby Tiger, Copper Underwing, 4 Scalloped Oak, Small Fan footed Wave and a Flame Shoulder. I also had a prime example of checking around your trap during the day sometimes pays off, when I found a smart Chocolate Tip and Pale Prominent.

JULY SUMMERY;

July finished with 1031 moths being caught and 31 new garden speices. More moths would have been around if it was not for the wettest June in the UK since 1888! The best night was the 10th with 61 caught and the worst nights being the 16th with just 9 and the 26th which was a wash out.
